Here are a few things I found helpful in a recent rough patch1. Own Up to All of the MistakesFor me, one of the most difficult things about being a professional is acknowledging that I missed a deadline or didnt follow all the instructions I was given. It sucks knowing that you let people down- and it feels even worse when you know what impact your mistakes had. But the first step I find helps me begin the comeback process is simply fessing up to everything I know I did (or didnt do). Sometimes its an inform al conversation with your boss. Other times it requires a sit-down meeting in which you lay it all out. (And if youre not sure what to do, check out the just right reaction for when you mess up.) This is a productive activity because not only do you get a chance to review everything that went wrong, but you also show your manager and your team that youre not the type of person to hide behind your shortcomings. Plus, being this transparent will tip those people off to the fact that you probably need a little help.2. Identify the Things You Couldve Done DifferentlyUnless youre actively trying to get fired, Im willing to bet that youre not going out of your way to do a bad job. Sometimes work is overwhelming and you cant focus on anything for too long before you start distracting yourself with cat memes on the internet .Take the work youve done in the first step a little further by walking back all the circumstances that led to you dropping the ball. Was a project incomplete because yo u werent careful enough about the execution? Were you overwhelmed by all the things you said yes to? Did you actually not understand the project as well as you thought you did? Think about what happened to lead up to your rough week, because the chances are that it wasnt just one thing that led to the ultimate result. 3. Create an Action Plan for Correcting Your MistakesNow that you know what you did and why those things happened, you can start to think about how to prevent them from occurring in the future. Of course, youll make more mistakes at work down the road- and you shouldnt expect anything more of yourself. But this activity will help you grow in a few areas in which you know that you havent been awesome at lately.If you werent careful enough about your project, make yourself a checklist to refer to in the future so that all of the details are addressed. If you were overwhelmed by everything you volunteered for, make a note of how long your to-do list was this time- then wh en it gets to that point again, dont be afraid to ask for help. And if you didnt understand the instructions as well as you thought, get clarity from the stakeholders you need it from to ensure that its crystal clear next time. If youre down on yourself after dropping the ball for the past week, dont worry- most (if not all) of us have been there. Theres nothing you can do to erase those rough days from the record books, but you can bounce back faster than you might think. It will take a little work- and a big dose of honesty with yourself- but youre talented and resilient enough to get back on track. And trust me, if I can do it, you can pull it off, too.

If we didnt have this orientation and if we didnt have a solid foundation, wed be continuously exposed to chaos and uncertainty, a nd we would have a much harder time feeling grounded and safe.There are many people that dont have any sort of stability in their lives - people that are poor or people without strong career prospects, for example - that we can look to who reassure us that these things are worth having.Yet, in a world where, fortunately, more people than not have some kind of groundedfoundation providing this stability, we still see large-scale dissatisfaction, boredom, and a general sense of purposelessness.This sense of dissatisfaction, boredom, and purposelessness may be temporarilysubduedwhen we find ourselves striving for the next thing that we presume will bring us stability, but for many, its still not too far away.What exactly are we missing?The Hidden Curse of AchievementLets break down the process of achievement into two different states.There isa state of strivingwhere we are moving and working towards a goal. And then there isa state of accomplishmentafter having achieved said goal, th us achieving a fasson of stability.The general assumption we all make is that achieving this stability is what will make us satisfied.After all, that is the hidden purpose behind whatever goals we choose to define when we decide that we want something.First, we decide that a particular future will make ushappier. Then, we choose a particular aim which we feel will allow us to experience said future. Finally, we tischset ourselves on our way to figuring out how to get to that goal.By definition, then,when we are striving - which is most of the time- we are in a state of instability.When we accomplish something, we gain ourselves stability. Thats howmost of us intuitively think and feel about this process.Except, thatsnothow it really works.The paradox is that achieving a goal is what leads to instability, whereas thestate of striving provides stability.Once we accomplish something, we lose our sense of orientation and get swayed towards the chaos that we naturally fear.On the other hand,while there is discomfort inthe act of striving- which we confuse for instability - its ironically the only thingthat actually keeps us grounded over time.Being in a state of unquestioned movement is what protects us from feeling that we are without a foundation.Achievement, however, is static. Once acquired, it fades towards instability.Volatility as a Measure of Well-BeingIn finance,volatility is essentially a measure of how much the returns of an asset are expected to deviate. Its the variation in price over a set period.The daily difference between the closing price of a stock, for example, could be something you might measure the volatility of. If it deviates a lot, then the volatility of that stock is high. If it doesnt deviate much, then its low.According to the author and statistician Nassim Taleb,systems of any kind with no volatility are bad at absorbing shocks, and thus fragile.Systems with some day to day volatile, however, can use such movement to absorb shocks well, and sometimes, even benefit from them. Its what he callsantifragility.When we are in a state of striving, we are constantly on the move over a sustained period of time. Some days, we move a lot. Other days, not so much.On a day to day basis, this movement may even be uncomfortable, but over time, it keeps us stable by protecting us from the chaos of disorientation.In a state of accomplishment, however, we dont move much at all. Weve achieved what we wanted to, assuming we have acquired a sense of stability.On a day to day basis, we may even enjoy this lack of movement, but over time, if the lack of orientation catches up to us, it immediately throws us into a state of instability, causing damage that we dont even see coming.Humans, like most systems of the world, need a degree of volatility to stay healthyand being in a position where you have everything you could ever want makes you fragile to the instability that we instinctively aim to avoid.Not having every luxury of stabi lity, ironically, is what keeps us stable.Wheres theBalance?Naturally, no matter what the system, too much volatility can itself be harmful. Having some sort of a foundation is necessary.If we dont completely limit downside, then that same volatility can shock itself out of temporary and varying instability into complete chaos.Humans need some foundation of achievement, and we obviously need many of our basic needs met in order to have a shot at contentment. Learning always involves new understandings and new behaviors, thinking and doing.If your behavior isnt changing, then youre not learning. True learning means you can produce a desired outcome. If you cant consistently produce the outcome you want, then you havent learned.According to Brain-scan studies, if you do not address a pro blem in 0.25 seconds after a mistake is made, you probably wont do anything about it. Youll brush-off the mistake and continue forward in the same manner youve been going. You wont be learning from your experience, and thus youll continue moving into your future by recreating your past.If instead, you would simply stop, address what just happened, and continue forward from a higher plane, you could then produce better outcomes in the future. You dont have to live in your past.This can only happen when you truly own when youve made a mistake. Rather than complaining for failures - or blaming the bad weather or something else - you learn from what is happening and adapt.Charles Darwin has said, It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the fruchtwein intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change. To adapt is to learn. The quicker you adapt, the better youll live. It doesnt matter what happens to you, it matters how you respond.Without ques tion, environment influence matters. But what matters more is what you do about it. You can either continue living reactively as an object, or you can adapt as an agent in new and better ways to change your environment.ConclusionYou can learn your lessons.Success is yours for the taking.You can success bigger than you can presently imagine.
